Energy policy
current issues, food for thought, background information
Turkey is fast becoming an energy transit hub. The completion in July 2006 of Baku-Tblisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline is adding a new dimension to Turkey?s importance for the international energy market. Moreover, Turkey is a fast growing energy market and largely dependent on external resources. Turkey is planning to build nuclear reactors to respond to her growing electricity demand. Some key Turkey?s energy projects are:
- The Nabucco natural gas pipeline project from Turkey to Austria through Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary to bring natural gas from Egypt, Syria and eventually from Iraq to the EU.
- Samsun Ceyhan crude oil pipeline project will let Russian gas to Lebanon and Israel via Turkey transport with a 50-70 million tons of oil annual transportation capacity via a 1,000 km long system.
- Turkey-Egypt gas project will carry 4 bcm/year of gas from Egypt to Turkey by a pipeline which will go through the Mediterranean Sea.
