    President Bush's Broken Promises

(Wall Street Journal) During his last 18 months in office, President Bush confronts a broader set of international crises than in his first 18 months. While pundits blame unilateralism and the Iraq war, the deterioration of Washington's relations with once-staunch allies has less to do with a lack of diplomacy and more to do with its kind.

Too often, the administration has sacrificed long-term credibility for short-term calm. Take Turkey. At the June 2004 NATO summit in Istanbul, President Bush promised Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that the U.S. military would shut down Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) terrorists in Iraq. Cook: Border Crisis between Turkey, Iraq Worsens U.S.-Turkey Ties

(Council on Foreign Relations) A week away from crucial parliamentary elections in Turkey, relations between the United States and Turkey have been severely strained over Turkey’s concerns over the PKK separatist group given safe haven in the Kurdistan area of northern Iraq. CFR Fellow Stephen A. Cook says a recent major poll shows that “in Turkey, a NATO country firmly allied with the United States over the last fifty years, only 9 percent of Turks have a favorable view of the United States.” Read more...

    US criticises Turkey-Iran gas deal

US is not happy with the close energy cooperation between Turkey and Iran. The United States today spoke out against a preliminary agreement between Turkey and its eastern neighbour Iran to carry natural gas from Iran and Turkmenistan to Europe, the Anatolia news agency reported.

'It does not seem wise to put increasing trust in Iran as a source and transit country of natural gas' when it is under sanctions over its nuclear programme, the agency quoted Kathryn Schalow, the spokeswoman for the US embassy here as saying. Read more...

Analysis: America’s Perspective on Turkish EU Relations

(Article by Nicholas Danforth): "America has consistently supported Turkey’s bid to join the European Union, believing that Turkish membership will advance America’s strategic interests by cementing Turkey’s Western orientation and democratic political culture. In the view of many American diplomats and analysts, American advocacy has been decisive in facilitating Turkey’s accession process, specifically in securing Turkey’s Customs Union agreement in 1995 and candidate status in 1999. While it is widely recognized that Turkey’s EU membership would set back American interests in certain areas, there is a firm bi-partisan consensus that any such losses would be outweighed by the larger strategic gains. That the Bush administration, famous for its “Anything-But-Clinton” approach to foreign policy, maintained Clinton’s uncompromising position on Turkish membership is a testament to the clarity of Washington’s approach to the issue."
