Foreign direct investment in Turkeycurrent issues, food for thought, background informationTurkey enjoys a very special location at the crossroads between east and west, spanning both Europe and Asia. Its proximity to emerging markets in Middle East and Central Asia creates unique business opportunities. It also has a huge domestic market – a population of 70 million with increasing consumer purchasing power. In the year 2006 Turkey could attract about US$ 18 billion of FDI. Several large privatization deals were finalized last year, including “Tupras” refineries, “Erdemir” steelworks, and the mobile phone operator “Telsim”. It is also intended to continue the ambitious privatization program in 2007, led by the sale of “TEDAS” electricity distribution networks and power generation facilities, the tobacco unit of “TEKEL”, the National Lottery, as well as “Halkbank”. |
