EU-Turkey relations

current issues, food for thought, background information

On 3 October 2005 Turkey has started accession negotiations with the European Union. She has already formed a customs union with the EU since 1996. The EU is Turkey's the most important trade partner. While technically the accession negotiations are progressing as well as can be expected, some political blocks remain on the road to Turkey’s accession to the EU. On 11 December 2006 EU foreign ministers decided to follow the Commission's recommendations and suspend talks with Turkey on eight of the 35 negotiating areas due to lack of progress on the Cyprus issue. The optimistic views suggest that Turkey’s accession to the EU looks unlikely before 2015.
