Domestic politics



The Turkey Parliamentary elections were held on 3 November 2002. The ruling party, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) took 34.28 per cent of the vote. The Republican People's Party (CHP) followed with 19.39 per cent of the vote. AKP and CHP took 541 of the 550 parliamentary seats. 2007 is a key year for Turkey’s domestic politics. Two dates will shape the political agenda: In May 2007 the new Turkish president will be elected and general elections will take place on 4 November 2007.
